Leadership
According to www.businessballs.com “Explaining
and understanding the nature of good leadership is probably easier than
practising it. Good leadership requires deep human qualities, beyond
conventional notions of authority. In
the modern age good leaders are an enabling force, helping people and
organisations to perform and develop, which implies that a sophisticated
alignment be achieved - of people's needs, and the aims of the organisation.
The traditional concept of a leader being the directing chief at the top of a
hierachy is nowadays a very incomplete appreciation of what true leadership
must be.” In the white papers that are provided
on this website, we aim to add our own insights into leadership and some ideas
that you may find of interest.

Values in Business
It has always been true that we take our custom back to the place where we had a good experience. Most people like to be treated fairly and well, so for most of us if we are treated that way: with courtesy and fairness – quality product for a fair price, we will return as a client. In today’s world this concern for value is more marked as we learn to live as members of a global community with interlinked opportunities and challenges. How each of us, at home and in work, cares about each other and about the environment, makes a difference to the state of the world. The adage “thinking global, acting local” is one usually recognised as valid. Many organisations not only recognise this but are doing something about them. For example the Aspen Institute Center for Business Education (CBE) equips business leaders for the 21st century with a new management paradigm—the vision and knowledge to integrate corporate profitability and social value. To that end, it provides business educators cutting edge classroom resources and creates peer networks to incorporate social and environmental stewardship into teaching, research and curriculum development. CBE web sites draw over 75,000 visits monthly and its events and networks attract over 1,000 participants each year. In the white papers we offer here, we add insights and information on this new paradigm for working in our ever-changing world. Serene Communications coordinates the Values in Business Network.

Advocacy
Advocacy is taking action to help people represent
their interests, say what they want and secure their rights. It can be said to be a political
process (about governance not partisan politics) by an individual or group that normally aims to
influence public-policy and resource allocation decisions within political,
economic, and social systems and institutions. Advocacy can be motivated from moral, ethical
or faith principles or to protect. Advocacy
can enable people to take more responsibility and control for the decisions
which affect their lives. In the white
papers published on this site we offer insights and ideas on areas of advocacy
in addition to specific campaigns or advocacy areas.

People and talent development
Some organisations take the view that in times of
economic constraint, the first thing to chop is people development: training/learning. Conversely it could be argued that this is
exactly the time to invest in up-skilling people. Organisations find themselves with the need
to reduce head count leaving the people who are left to do more work. Organisations may have less volume of work
and therefore the time to give to training and development. In either case, the people in the
organisation will need to face the challenges of survival now and growth later. It therefore pays to use times of crisis as
an opportunity to prepare for the future.
There are different ways to decide on who to train up and what kind of
training is required. What is
well-researched is that people centred training leads to greater productivity
in the long run. In the white papers on
this site we aim to provide ideas about people development in general in
addition to specific tools and ideas to help in deciding what kind of training
to go for.
